Obelisco

A symbol of Buenos Aires city, the Obelisk was built in May 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first foundation of Buenos Aires.

Caminito

This is an open air street-museum that recreates the typical conventillos (housing projects) of the early La Boca neighbourhood. Every weekend, tango shows are put on by professional tango dancers and singers.
Address: Crossroads of Garibaldi and Olavarría street.

 

Cancha de Boca

This mythical stadium is found on Brandsen street where it intersects with Del Valle Iberlucea street. It is one of the most popular soccer clubs in the country. Founded in 1940, it was then popularly called “La Bombonera” (the candy jar). In the entrance hall there are some great soccer-related murals painted by Benito Quinquela Martín and others by Pérez Celis.

River Plate Stadium

This stadium is popularly known as "El Monumental", since it was one of the first big stadiums in the whole of South America. It opened in 1938, with a capacity of 70,000 spectators. El Monumental is the official stadium of the Argentina National Selection. It is also the venue for the main test-matches played by Los Pumas and musica concerts such as The Rolling Stones, U2, Amnesty International, Madonna, Guns´n Roses, Eric Clapton and Red Hot Chili peppers, among others. The Athletic River Plate Club was founded on May 25, 1901 in La Boca neighbourhood. This was when "La Banda Roja" (the red stripe) was created. The club was later moved to Palermo and then to Belgrano district. River Plate has been granted 32 local awards and 5 international cups. River Plate club offers first class facilities, an interactive museum of 3,500 m2 and an immense indoor swimming pool.

Recoleta Cemetery

The Recoleta Cemetery is the oldest and the most ‘aristocratic’ cemetery in the city. Its covers almost 6 hectares (14,000 acres) and is the place of rest for Independence patriots, presidents of the Republic, military people, scientists and artists. Among them, Eva Perón, Adolfo Bioy Casares and Facundo Quiroga.

 

Botanical Garden

Inaugurated in 1908, the Botanical Garden was designed towards the end of the 19th. century by the French landscape designer Carlos Thays to help accomplish university studies and to classify botanical species.

Hours: Monday through Sundays, from 8 am to 6 pm.

Manzana de las Luces

This set of buildings also has tunnels, built in the XVIII century, connecting the Cabildo (government´s cradle in the colonial period and currently a museum) and the Cathedral with the San Ignacio, San Francisco, Santo Domingo, San Juan, Del Salvador churches, the old Irish convent, the Capuchinas monastery, the Vicequeen ´s house, the Socorro de la Recoleta and other surrounding buildings.


Palermo

This park has covers more than 80 hectares and is full of old trees. There are also two artificial lakes bordering the woodland. You can explore these areas by boat or water bike. Also, there is the “Poets Garden”, the “Andalusian Yard” and the “Roses Garden”, commonly known as El Rosedal, with 15,000 rose bushes and more than 1,100 different plant species. Crossroads of Libertador and Sarmiento avenues.


Plaza Dorrego

On Sundays, in the streets surrounding the square, there are many tango and folklore shows as well as art exhibitions. The market is in the heart of the traditional ‘San Telmo’ district where there were many large old houses dating back to the 19th century which were later refurbisded as antique shops and first class restaurants.

Puente de la Mujer

This is a new pedestrian bridge which was built in Dock 3, in the Puerto Madero district. It interprets a couple dancing tango, where the white mast represents the man and the curved profile of the bridge is the woman.

Reserva Ecológica

This is a green area of some 360 hectares with some very unique features: The land was created from the river deposits. As years went by, a wide variety of flora and fauna started to grow. It has been officially declared as a “Natural Park and Reservoir Area”.

Casa de Gobierno o Casa Rosada (Government building) Balcarce 50

Built in 1810, after the first government meeting, it was later refurbished to its present condition in 1884. President Sarmiento (1868-1874) is responsible for the pink colour of the building today. The presidential entrance is on Rivadavia street; facing the other direction, the ruins of the old customs building; you can find the entrance to the Casa Rosada museum (Pink House) on Yrigoyen Street.
